Elegance and dress code for dark skinned women - What no one tells you, what you’d like to know but don’t dare ask, and other uncomfortable yet useful truths.

My story

Alina Balijja

Author and image consultant

I was born in Italy in 1974 to an Italian mother and a Ugandan father, in a white world for white people, as was typical at the time.

But I am Black, and I experienced discomfort and a sense of inadequacy about my image—not because I “rejected” it, but because I couldn’t express my “essence” coherently. As a child, I often felt marginalized or judged due to ridiculous prejudices, and I suffered for it. It’s true that I wanted a personal revenge, but more than anything, I wanted to be and express my true self, aligning my mental image with my real one.
On the other hand, I was always fascinated by the magnetism of certain women and wanted to understand their secret.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY Behind my love for visual harmony and the beauty of Creation was my father’s art—he was a painter who always guided and pushed me not to settle for small achievements. In my quest to uncover the secret of feminine magnetism, I became passionate about fashion and tailoring, even though I pursued scientific studies, driven by an inquisitive spirit. Despite my commitment and efforts, something still didn’t click. I couldn’t pinpoint my styling mistakes.
Then unexpectedly, I met someone who became very important to me and introduced me to Image Consulting. This person taught me everything she knew and continues to do so with passion! She opened my eyes to what I couldn’t see and helped me discover my beauty, my face and body as I had never seen them before.

THE POWER OF HARMONY Forget motivational courses to boost self-esteem! I began deepening my knowledge and refining it on myself. While studying, I noticed one of the major problems that had “sabotaged” me emotionally over the years: everything had always been “tailored” and “designed” for Italian white women.

This realization led me to write the book Elegance and the Dress Code for Dark-Skinned Women!

Once I “named my enemy,” I was able to reevaluate everything from a NEW perspective—my own, as a Dark-Skinned woman. I began revisiting everything I had learned about image consulting from a different perspective: that of a Afro-descendant living in a world of white people.

THE SECRET REVEALED I have to admit, my journey was gradual, involving study, experience, and a well-trained sense of observation.

My researcher’s background helped me approach this with method and determination.
Finally, my deep love for beauty, harmony, and elegance found the right direction—even for someone like me, who doesn’t fit the standard Italian aesthetic. The word “impossible” doesn’t exist in my vocabulary, and with that conviction, I never stopped.
Of course, I continue to study because I know this isn’t the end but rather the beginning.

I came to realize that the secret of feminine magnetism is a gem worn by few women. Unfortunately, for the others, the secret remains hidden, its existence ignored, to the point where “magnetism” is mistaken for something far less empowering.

SHARING AND SPREADING BEAUTY Writing the book Elegance and the Dress Code for Dark-Skinned Women felt like a duty, as well as the natural consequence of my desire to see beauty everywhere. Believe me, my heart aches every time I see women, especially young ones, neglecting themselves—or worse, “throwing themselves away“, giving credence to and confirming harmful stereotypes and unflattering clichés. This only serves to demoralize, irritate, or even anger Black ladies who don’t know how to properly equip themselves or defend their value.

SO MANY ADVANTAGES! As I mentioned, this journey has greatly boosted my self-esteem, which was previously quite low. I’ve learned to dress intentionally, tailoring my non-verbal message to match what I want to communicate in any given moment. Shopping has become much simpler, and my choices are targeted and perfect for me, as well as for creating various combinations with items already in my wardrobe.

This isn’t just about image—it never is. Anyone who reduces it to a mere whim is settling for mediocrity. I sincerely believe that in a world that is morally adrift, striving for good taste and decorum is a meaningful challenge that benefits everyone.

All the beauty I’ve received, I want to share with all the wonderful women who truly want to make a positive change in their lives, knowing that improving one’s image impacts the subconscious and also enhances the environment around them, including relationships.

I am grateful for everything I’ve learned and for those who have taught me.

I am grateful to all my clients, who allow me to discover how unique and beautiful each one of them is.
I repeat, this is a journey of discovery for everyone.

Now, I’m curious to learn about you and your story so we can draw mutual strength from our life experiences.
